With a team stocked with sluggers like Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Roy White and Mickey Rivers, the New York Yankees needed a solid starter to bolster their pitching staff going into the 1977 season. An early season trade secured the services of Mike Torrez from the Oakland A’s. The crafty journeyman won 14 games for the Bronx Bombers that summer, second best on the staff and proved to be just what the Yanks needed to win their second consecutive AL pennant. Torrez really proved his worth in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning Games 1 and 6 to bring the World Championship back to the Bronx after a decade-and-a-half drought.
This is Mike Torrez’ personal World Series Trophy. Fashioned on a 7-inch diameter black base, the trophy has a bronze band inscribed with “MIKE TORREZ WORLD SERIES CHAMPS 2 GAME WINNER vs. L.A. DODGERS GAME 3 AND 6.” 26 bronze flagpoles topped with the names of each of the MLB teams (AL on the left, NL on the right, alphabetical order) from the base. Two World Series press pins representing the Dodgers and Yankees are fastened to the base. Inside the circle of mini flags sits a bronze ring, anchored with a silver baseball and topped with a gold crown. The trophy is in excellent condition with just light wear (mostly on the silver baseball) from age and display. A significant piece of World Series history from the man who brought the World Championship back to New York.
