Following the 1978 season, the Philadelphia Phillies front office knew what they had to do. After dropping two straight NLCS to the Western Division Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, the Phillies brass needed a more consistent batter who got on base ahead of big boppers Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski. They made Pete Rose the highest paid athlete in team sports when they signed him to a four-year, $3.2-million contract as a free agent. With perennial All-Star Mike Schmidt firmly entrenched at third, Rose, a fully committed team player, made the final position change of his career to first base.

Rose wore this maroon Philadelphia Phillies cap during his tenure with the Phillies from 1979 through 1983. This size 7 1/8 cap was made by Wilson and features the Phillies “P” logo embroidered on the front in white. This six-panel hat has a white button on top and a green underside of the brim that has Rose’s number “14” handwritten in black marker. This cap displays moderate game use with some sweat stains on the inner lining. Rose has signed his name in bold black marker on the top of the brim. This cap comes with a LOA from MEARS for the game use and a STICKER ONLY from PSA/DNA (1A34424) for the signature.
