The New York Yankees and the entire baseball world mourned the loss of catcher Thurman Munson, when the Cessna plane he was flying crashed near the Akron-Canton Regional Airport in Ohio on August 2nd, 1979. Munson, who was 32 years old at the time of his passing, was the captain of the Yankees and were coming off back-to-back World Series titles while in hot pursuit of a third straight title and fourth straight pennant in 1979. With the untimely passing of such an iconic player during the prime of his career, game used items from Thurman Munson, especially from his final season, are very rare.

Offered here is one of the game pants used by Munson during his final season in 1979. These gray road pants were made by Wilson and show moderate use. The Wilson tag is sewn on the inside waist and has “35 ½” handwritten in black marker indicating the waist size. A gray team strip is also sewn on the inside waist with “Munson 79 2 22” embroidered in black. This indicates the player, set and inseam. The pants have some brown stains on both the front and back and a noticeable team repair on the inner part of the left knee. Since players were generally issued two to three sets per season, it’s possible these might have been one of the last game pants worn by Munson before his untimely passing. These pants come with a LOA from MEARS for the game use. Please note that this item was recently authenticated by MEARS. An LOA will be pictured in this lot when it is received in our office and will be shipped to the winner.
