Yogi Berra's association with the Yankees was a long and successful one, as the Hall of Fame catcher either played, managed or coached with the club for more than thirty seasons. He was one of the greatest Yankee ballplayers of all time and, to the time of his passing in 2015, he was among the most popular personalities in the world of sports. Offered is a New York Yankees home jersey worn by Yogi Berra as a coach in 1979. This blue-pinstriped, white knit button-down garment features the team's famed overlapping "NY" logo sewn to the left breast in navy-blue tackle twill and Berra's number "8" applied to the back in like fashion. (Berra's uniform number was shared with fellow Hall of Famer Bill Dickey, and it is now jointly retired by the club.) A "Wilson" size "44" manufacturer's label is sewn to the left front tail, and a strip tag with a chain-stitched notation of "Berra 79 1" in script-style characters is secured within the collar. A black band is sewn near the end of the left sleeve, in memory of tragically felled teammate Thurman Munson. The item shows moderate wear consistent with coaching duties. Graded A-9 by MEARS.
