The Phillies boasted a roster loaded with talent, including future Hall of Famers Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, and Steve Carlton; the Phillies finished with a record of 91-71, beating the Montreal Expos by one game for the National League East title. The Phillies defeated the Astros in the National League Championship Series to gain their first National League pennant since 1950. The Phillies would go on to face the Kansas City Royals in the World Series, a first in World Series history where neither team had won the championship previously. The Phillies dispatched the Royals in six games, with Game 6 being the most-watched World Series game in MLB history. The win was the first World Series victory for the Phillies, with the team being the last of the original 16 MLB teams to win the title.
