Under the guidance of future Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog, the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals made their first World Series appearance in 14 long years. With Ozzie Smith and Keith Hernandez holding down the infield and George Hendrick and Lonnie Smith adding the power, the Cards won the National League East Division by a three-game margin over the Philadelphia Phillies.

After sweeping the Braves, the Cards met the Brewers in the first “Suds Series” between the two beer making metropolises. After coming back from a 10-0 defeat in Game 1, the Cardinals stretched the series to the full limit, with aces Bruce Sutter and Joaquin Andujar teaming up to defeat the Brewers 6-3 in the do-or-die Game 7.

The result: this Balfour-made commissioner’s trophy. The trophy is 11 inches high and ringed by 26 gold colored pennants representing both leagues. A silver baseball sits in the center surmounted by a gold ring atop which is a gold-colored crown. In front of the silver ball are two press pins representing the Cardinals and Brewers. The trophy's base is surrounded by a brass plaque which reads "ST. LOUIS CARDINALS CHAMPIONS 1982". The underside of the base has a Balfour label affixed along with a white sticker with “#6” handwritten in blue pen. The trophy is in very good condition with light surface wear to the base and some abrasions to the silver ball mounted at its center. The ultimate symbol of St. Louis’ long-awaited return to the World Series.
