The 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics were a monumental occasion, marking the first time the United States competed at the Summer Olympics since the 1976 Montreal Games. 6,829 athletes from 140 countries competed, bringing the Summer Games spirit of fraternity and competition back to the United States for the first time since the 1932 Los Angeles Games.
This torch is made of what appears to be brass at the hilt, mid-section and head. The handle is made of brown leather and engraved in the head of the torch are the words “Altius, Fortius, Citius” in blue, fuchsia, and red lettering. The 1984 Summer Olympics torch relay began in New York City and ended in Los Angeles. Traversing 33 states, the torches were carried on foot and the route covered more than 9,320 miles and involved 3,636 runners. Rafer Johnson, winner of the decathlon at the 1960 Summer Olympics, was the final torchbearer at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. With the torch, he lit the flammable Olympic logo and ignited the five Olympic rings, leaving the rings lit for the duration of the games.
