“Mr. Padre” Tony Gwynn had his breakout season in 1984, when he made his first of 15 All-Star Game appearances and helped lead the San Diego Padres to their first ever National League pennant. Gwynn appeared in 158 games where he led the NL in batting average at .351 and hits with 213 and the Hall of Famer earned his first of seven Silver Slugger Awards and finished 3rd in the NL MVP vote. Offered here is one of the bats used by Gwynn during the 1984 spring training. This bat displays outstanding game use and is un-cracked. There are ball marks, along with blue and black ink transfers present on the barrel. These blue and black ink transfer marks are indicators that this bat was used in spring training as it would have been the only time in which he would have faced American League pitchers throwing AL baseballs with the blue ink stamps. Gwynn’s number “19” is handwritten in black marker on the knob. Gwynn has signed his name on the barrel in faded blue marker and inscribed “4/24/85”. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B24195) for the use and a LOA from Beckett Authentication (A40171) for the signature and inscription.
