Yogi Berra wore this road jersey as the manager of the New York Yankees in 1985. This was Berra’s second season as the manager of the Yankees, and heading into the season his job security was tenuous. Berra agreed to coach the Yankees in ’85 after receiving the iron-clad assurance of mercurial team owner George Steinbrenner that his job was safe and the three-time American League MVP would not be fired. However, Steinbrenner went back on his promise just 16 games into the season, unceremoniously firing the beloved skipper. This action rightfully infuriated Berra, and thus began a feud between the former catcher and the Yankees that would go on for almost 15 years.

     This jersey is likely one of the final on-field jerseys worn by Berra in an official capacity in his long career with the Yankees. The New York ballclub played eight road games in 1985 before Berra was fired, with the last three games of his tenure taking place at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

     This gorgeous button down gray road jersey features “NEW YORK” sewn across the front in navy blue-on-white tackle twill. Berra’s number “8”, which was retired in 1972, is sewn on the back of the jersey in navy blue-on-white tackle twill. The sleeve openings of this jersey feature a navy blue and white band. A gray tag embroidered with “Berra 85 1” is sewn on the back inside collar. A Wilson size “44” tag is sewn on the front left tail of this jersey.
