This 1986-1987 Ha-Lo Spirit of Love Award was presented to Hall of Fame forward Julius Erving by the National Basketball Players Association. 1986-87 was the final season of Dr. J’s storied career. Age barely slowed the good doctor, who finished the season with a scoring average of nearly 17 points per game. Along with third year power forward Charles Barkley, Erving led the Sixers to a 45-37 record, good for second place in the Atlantic Division.
At the end of the season, the NBA Players Association honored Erving for his decades of service to the sport of basketball, awarding him with this Ha-Lo trophy. The award is shaped like a basketball on a stand and is made of clear glass. The basketball has a diameter of 12 inches, and the entire trophy measures roughly 19 inches tall. The trophy also features an engraved NBA Players Association logo and a stylized Ha-Lo logo. “National Spirit of Love Award / 1986-87 / JULIUS ERVING” and “National Basketball Players Association” is inscribed near the base of the statue.
