The now defunct Western Professional Hockey League began play during the 1996-97 season and featured six teams, based primarily in Texas and Louisiana. Led by Chris MacKenzie (a team-high 84 points), Jamie Thompson (34 goals) and Bill Trew (33 goals) the 1996-97 El Paso Buzzards finished the season with a record of 33-23-0-8), good for 74 points. The Buzzards would finish in third place, but earn a playoff berth and end up winning the 1996-97 Western Professional Hockey League championship. The El Paso Buzzards were the champions of the inaugural season and presented here is the championship ring. This gold-plated ring features the Buzzards’ logo in gold on the front, with “WPHL CHAMPIONS” surrounding the outside. One shank has “WPHL” and six stars signifying the six teams in the league and olive branches. The opposite shank has “El Paso BUZZARDS” in raised relief and “LERNER”. The ring weighs approximately 45.7 grams and is a size 11. This ring comes with the original purchase LOA.
