While Cal Ripken, Jr. received tremendous accolades when he broke Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130 consecutive games played, there was actually still one more record that needed to be broken to be the true Iron Man – that of Japanese league star Sachio Kinugasa. Cal surpassed that record on the night of June 14, 1996 when he played in his 2,216th consecutive game. This is the black Orioles cap that was worn by Ripken during the milestone game played on June 14th, 1996.

Ripken’s New Era 59/50 cap is an all-black wool material with a six-panel crown. The Orioles’ oriole bird logo is embroidered on the front in orange, black and white stitching. The back of the cap hs the MLB logo patch embroidered in Orioles colors and the underside brim is gray. Ripken’s number “8” is handwritten in black marker on the gray underside brim with “2216” handwritten in blue marker to the left. On the white inside sweatband are the “New Era 59/50” and “100% WOOL SIZE 7 3/8” tags. This hat displays moderate game use with soil staining and dirt marks on the lower underside brim, consistent with being handled with dirt-covered fingers. This cap comes directly from the personal collection of Cal Ripken, Jr. and a signed LOA from Cal will accompany this historic cap.
