An All-Star in 1997-98 for the first of an eventual 18 career appearances, Bryant began to bloom as "The Black Mamba" in his sophomore NBA campaign: he averaged 15.4 points per game, and 21.4 points per 36 minutes, as the sixth man for the 61-21 Lakers.
