As an “old” rookie in 1998, Shane Spence’s Yankees teammates took to calling the 26-year-old “Roy Hobbs” after the middle-aged rookie in the novel and movie “The Natural.” Although he wasn’t able to replicate his .373 rookie season batting average, Spence’s sophomore summer saw him hitting 8 homers as the Yanks beat Atlanta for the World Championship. Spence’s 1999 Rawlings 456B model bat displays great game use. The barrel is covered with ball marks that include leather scuffs and ink transfers. There are many bat rack paint streaks and cleat impressions visible and the handle has a moderate coat of pine tar. The knob has been stamped with the model number “456B.” This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B18220) for the game use and has been graded a perfect GU 10.
