The 1998-99 National Hockey Association season was the last played by Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky. Gretzky signed with the New York Rangers in 1996, playing three seasons with the team and helped lead the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1997, with Gretzky contributing 10 goals and 10 assists during the Rangers loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in five games. Gretzky broke the last record of his career during the 1998-99 season when he broke Gordie Howe’s professional goal total with his 1,071st goal of his career. Gretzky would retire in 1999 with over 61 NHL records to his name, including leading goal scorer, assist leader, and point scorer in NHL history. Gretzky is the only player to total over 200 points in a season, accomplishing the feat a record four times. Gretzky had 16 seasons where he registered over 100 points, with 14 of those seasons in consecutive order. Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999, the last player in NHL history to have the waiting period for entry waved.
