The 2001 Major League Baseball World Series occurred just a mere seven weeks after the devastating September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States that resulted in a postponement of the season. The first World Series to go undecided in October, the seven-game series between the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks wouldn’t be decided until November. A dramatic series set against dramatic times, Game 4 of the series was played at Yankee Stadium and was a nail-biter till the end. With an Arizona pitching staff led by Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson limiting the potent Yankee offense, the game was tied 1-1 going into the eighth inning. The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead, sending in closer Byung-Hyun Kim for a two-inning save. The Yankees had other plans. The Yankees scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. As the clock struck midnight, the scoreboard clock at Yankee Stadium read “Welcome to November Baseball,” with Game 4 being the first non-exhibition MLB game played in November. Feared Yankees closer Mariano Rivera took the mound and retired the side during the top of the tenth, with Kim returning to the mound for the Diamondbacks. Kim would face prolific hitter Derek Jeter, with Jeter connecting with an opposite-field home run to win the game for the Yankees. For his efforts, Jeter earned the humorous nickname “Mr. November.” The Diamondbacks would ultimately win the series in seven games, the first World Series championship for the four-year-old franchise.
