Real Madrid C.F. opened their 2008 season with a thrilling 6-5 aggregate victory over Valencia in the Supercopa de Espana. This home-and-home series saw Valencia claim the first leg 3-2 at the Mestalla, overcoming a pair of goals from Madrid’s Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, before los merengues beat back a late Valencia onslaught in a 4-2 victory at the Bernabeu. Despite going down to nine men in the second leg, late goals from Sergio Ramos, Ruben de la Red, and Gonzalo Higuain enabled Bernd Schuster’s galacticos to lift their eighth Supercopa title. Van Nistelrooy scored a 50th minute penalty in the second leg before picking up his second yellow card of the match in the 72nd minute. Valencia’s goals in the second leg were scored by Spanish icons David Silva and Fernando Morientes.
