Colin Kaepernick has been thrust into the national spotlight, which started with his sitting on the bench during the playing of the national anthem during the third pre-season game of 2016 in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Kaepernick would later change to taking a knee during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner out of respect for current and former military members. The issue has since divided the NFL players and owners and has been the subject of several tweets and speeches from President Donald Trump. Kaepernick has been out of the NFL since the 2016 season and was recently made the focus of Nike’s 30th Anniversary ad campaign of the “Just Do It” slogan.
Offered here is the jersey worn by Kaepernick during the 2012 season, where he appeared in 13 games and started his first seven games of his career. Kaepernick’s play helped lead the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII, where they fell 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens. This Nike On-Field size 42 red mesh jersey features Kaepernick’s number “7” sewn on in white tackle twill on the front, back and shoulders. “49ers” is embroidered in white above the number on front and the vinyl NFL shield patch is sewn on the base of the v-neck. The sleeves have been shortened to fit just over the shoulder pads and white applique’ stripes are on the ends of the sleeves. The back of the jersey has “KAEPERNICK” sewn on in white tackle twill on a matching red nameplate above his number. The Nike tag is sewn on the inside back collar. This jersey displays light wear and comes with a LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema.
