Offered is a piece of luggage used by the baseball immortal, George Herman “Babe” Ruth. Ruth’s professional baseball career spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 to 1935.  He began his career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. In 1936, Ruth was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its "first five" inaugural members.

The 12 x 17 x 24-inch light brown leather suitcase has a 1 ½ x 2-inch white card luggage identification card with the inscription “G.H. Ruth 178 Riverside N.Y.N.Y’ in blue ink. There is the inscription “G. H. Ruth” in gold letters on the top under the handles. There are four gold metal studs on the top of the luggage, and two gold metal clasps with brown leather handles and straps around the suitcase.  There are scratches in the leather on all four sides, along with some fraying leather at the base. The interior is lined in red stain cloth, with elastic pouches on the inside bottom sides and one in the inside top. During his life in New York, Ruth lived for many years at the Ansonia Hotel on Broadway and 73d Street, and then successively at 345 West 88th Street, 173 Riverside Drive, at 89th Street, and 110 Riverside Drive, at 83d Street.  This item comes with a letter of provenance.
