The New York Yankees as we know them today were born in the 1920s. The Bronx Bombers claimed their first World Series title in 1923, in their first season playing in the venerable Yankee Stadium. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Earle Combs, Urban Shocker, and a cadre of additional Hall of Famers drove the Yankees to unforeseen heights, winning eight of the franchise’s 27 World Series titles in the 1920s and 1930s. Under manager Miller Huggins the Yankees transformed from New York’s doormat, forced to share a stadium with the more-popular New York Giants, into the biggest draw in baseball powered by its brightest star.

The item offered in this lot dates from the first era of Yankee invincibility, circa the mid-1920s. This gray and navy blue cardigan sweater, which originates from Sotheby’s lot number 577, still has the original hanging tag. The sweater was worn by an unknown Yankee, lending to its historical mystique. It is a button down sweater, with a crisp navy blue collar and a Yankee logo sewn on the left breast. The ends of the sleeves are navy blue and the “Spalding” tag is on the inside front right tail. The cardigan is in tremendous condition with all eight original green buttons still intact, and is an incredible piece of New York Yankees history.
