The year 1980 was special for Crenshaw High School senior outfielder Darryl Strawberry. He was drafted by the New York Mets as the No. 1 overall pick and bestowed with this stately award, honoring him as the nation's top amateur athlete. Measuring slightly less than 16" wide, the plate reads: "THE TANQUERAY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TO #1 AMATEUR BASEBALL PLAYER DARRYL STRAWBERRY FOR HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE FIELD OF AMATEUR SPORTS AUGUST 6, 1980." The award is EX-MT with 60% tarnishing on the front and 90% on the back, but could be improved with minimal effort. Within a few weeks, "Straw" began his professional journey in the minor leagues and within three years was the National League MVP with the Mets.
