Offered is a United States Army General Douglas MacArthur signed cut in a framed collage with an excerpt from his Sylvanus Thayer Award acceptance address delivered to the Corps of Cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York on May 12, 1962. MacArthur (1880-1964) was General of the Army, a five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines campaign, which made him and his father Arthur MacArthur Jr. the first father and son to be awarded the medal. He was one of only five to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the US Army, and the only one conferred the rank of field marshal in the Philippine Army. MacArthur signed his name in black pen “Douglas Mac Arthur” on a 3 x 3½-inch white paper cut mounted at the bottom center of a brown matte. Above the MacArthur-signed cut is 6¾ x 7½-inch white paper typewritten transcript excerpt from his acceptance speech for the Sylvanus Thayer Award. The Sylvanus Thayer Award is an honor given annually by the United States Military Academy at West Point to an individual whose character and accomplishments exemplifies the motto of West Point. The award is named after the 'Father of the Military Academy,' Colonel Sylvanus Thayer. The awardee is selected by, and the award is endowed by, a committee formed from the West Point Association of Graduates. It has been awarded annually since 1958 and is the closest recognition West Point has to granting an honorary degree. The MacArthur-signed cut and speech excerpt are displayed in a 9½ x 12½-inch silver metal with glass frame. This item comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication.
