Herbert Hoover was a humanitarian prior to being elected the 31st President of the United States where he served as the leader of the free world from March 4, 1929 to March 4, 1933. Hoover led the Commission for Relief in Belgium, an international organization that provided food relief to German-occupied Belgium during World War I. Hoover also served as the director of the U.S. Food Administration and served as the third Secretary of Commerce where he helped develop air travel and the fledging medium of radio before the Republican ascended to the country’s highest office. Hoover was elected to office at the beginning of the Great Depression, and the staunch conservative struggled to enact policy that could lift the American economy. Defeated by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 presidential election, Hoover retired to write numerous books. Presented here is a copy of Hoover’s book “Fishing For Fun-And To Wash Your Soul” and drew a sketch with pencil of a resting rod and reel with two fish resting in front of a wicker basket. Hoover initialed the sketch with “H.H” on the inside cover below the penciled sketch. The 5 ½ x 8-inch hard cover book features a blue cover with the facsimile signature of Hoover in gold on the cover. The book displays some evidence of cornering and shows wear on the edges. The sketch is still vivid and the pages feature no toning. The book comes with a silk maroon tie worn by Hoover, an avid fisherman, when he would go on fishing expeditions. The tie features a “F.R. Tripler & Co. New York” manufacturing tag with a black “All Silk” flag. The tie is in excellent condition. The hard cover “Fishing For Fun-And To Wash Your Soul” book featuring a sketch by Hoover and the silk tie he wore while fishing come with an LOA from Beckett Authentication (AA09027) for the signature.
