Sandwiched in between his time with the Philadelphia Athletics, Hall of Famer Eddie Collins spent the middle portion of his career with the Chicago White Sox and owner Charles Comiskey. Collins’ 12-year career in the Windy City saw the second baseman hit a robust .331. In his first eight seasons with the White Sox, Collins’ contract was worth $15,000 per season, which translates to roughly $215,000 in today’s dollars. Collins addressed his contract situation with Comiskey via a letter in the latter part of 1922 or the early part of 1923 and offered here is the typed letter signed by Comiskey in response.

The letter is dated “Feb. 23d,1923.”and is on “Chicago” letterhead with “Charles A. Comiskey, President  J. Louis Comiskey, Treasurer  Harry A. Grabiner, Secretary  Wm. Gleason, Manager” printed in blue on the upper left corner. On the upper right corner is printed in blue “Comiskey Park 35th and Shields Avenue Chicago”. The letter is typed in black and reads: “Mr. E.T. Collins Landsowne, Pa. My dear Friend: I am in receipt of your letter of February 20th containing your contract unsigned. I wish to advise you that I feel you have always been very well treated in every way while you have been a member of the Chicago Club and I consider the contract which was tendered to you – and which was on the same basis as you have received the past seasons – to be very fairy fair and an equitable one in every way. Sincerely yours,”. Comiskey then signed his name in bold blue pen below the “Sincerely yours,” and signed it “Chas. a Comiskey”. The letter is in good condition given its age and only displays minor toning. There are two horizontal folds consistent with being placed in an envelope and there are only minor markings and edgewear. The White Sox shield is in bright colors on the top center and this letter is truly a museum worthy piece. This signed letter comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AE05261).
