Presented here is a jersey worn by former all-time saves leader Lee Smith during his early-career tenure with the Puerto Rican Winter League team Cangrejeros de Santurce. Santurce is the most successful Puerto Rican team in history, employing such beisbol luminaries as Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays. In the early 1980s, more and more Major League teams began sending players to the Caribbean Winter Leagues, with Smith included amongst the players traveling southbound and down.
This jersey is a gray, road button down jersey, and has “SANTURCE” sewn across the chest in blue tackle twill. “SMITH” and his number “43” are sewn on the back of the jersey in blue tackle twill. A Wilson size “44” tag is sewn on the back inside collar. Smith signed the “4” digit in silver marker, adding the inscription “Game Used”. This item is accompanied by a LOA from Smith himself.
