On June 2nd, 1935 Babe Ruth announce his retirement from baseball. Meeting the press that day must have been as hard to do for Ruth as it was for baseball fans of all ages to hear. For the first time in 22 years, Babe Ruth would not be playing ball. Though the emotions The Babe must have been experiencing that day had to have been overwhelming, he never let himself forget the fans that helped make him the game's greatest player. Sometime during the course of that tough day, Ruth took the time to sign and mail this 3x5 postal card to Mae Bear from the Bronx. The back of the card has been signed by The Babe "Sincerely, Babe Ruth" in strong black fountain pen. On its aged vintage card stock, this beauty would be the keystone to any Ruth or baseball autograph collection - but it is its postmark - 9:30 PM June 2, 1935 Boston, Mass - the very day Babe Ruth announced his retirement - that takes this piece to a whole other level. The condition of the card is very good; the postmarked side shows usual postal wear and there are the remains of two pieces of clear tape on the left and right sides. The upper two corners show some creasing and overall the card has taken on a nice patina with age. The signature side displays beautifully and Ruth's signature has been authenticated and graded an 8 by PSA/DNA. Perhaps the most unique piece of Babe Ruth memorabilia associated with the day he left the game forever.
