A collection of 51 baseball cards is presented. One card – a "Ready To Tag" pose of Hall of Famer William "Buck" Ewing – has been encapsulated and assessed "Authentic" by SGC. Here's a significant assembly of the baseball-themed paper antiques referenced in the American Card Catalog as N284. These insert cards, produced for Buchner's Gold Coin Chewing Tobacco in 1887, are unusual in that many of the likenesses in the set do not resemble the cards' avowed subjects, but the depictions' period flavor is unmistakable. In addition to Ewing (two examples), this array is highlighted by the presence of such 19th Century diamond luminaries as (Charles) Comiskey, (Dan) Brouthers, (Adrian "Cap") Anson and (Mike "King") Kelly. Many of the cards exhibit irregular borders (and, in several cases, large black-letter overprinting), suggesting that they might have been hand-cut from a sheet or some kind of advertising piece. Nonetheless, a majority of the scarce, visually engaging relics boast strong colors and bright presentation quality. Mostly PR to GD with a few nicer.
