The role-playing game was released in North America on September 9, 1999, to critical acclaim and sold over one million copies. The game follows a group of mercenaries led by Squall Leonhart, who is drawn into conflict with Ultimecia, a sorceress from the future who seeks to compress time. The game is known for its original story and spectacular visuals and is the first “Final Fantasy” to use realistically proportioned characters, 3D graphics, and pre-rendered backgrounds. The game continues to influence the genre today.
