The USA Men’s hockey upset the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3 during the medal round of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York. The photo perfectly captures the exaltation felt by the rag-tag group of amateurs who, against all odds, defeated a far-superior and experienced Soviet team. The American flag hoisted by a joyous fan, waves majestically in the background of the USA team many expected to be demolished by the Soviets.
