A historic person in the history not only of sports but also of the United States, Jackie Robinson broke the baseball “color line” when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed Robinson, they heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. During his 10-year MLB career with the Dodgers, Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954, and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949—the first black player so honored. Robinson played in six World Series and contributed to the Dodgers' 1955 World Series championship. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

Presented here is a 3 x 5-inch typed note that has been signed by the historical legend himself. This note also includes the original mailing envelope with an April 28, 1952 postmark. The note reads “Dear Calvin: I received your letter and I enjoyed hearing from you. I was glad to know of your interest in baseball. It is very difficult to advise you on how to improve your game unless one can see you in action. Best Wishes. Sincerely,”. Robinson signed his name in black pen below the “Sincerely,” type. This note displays toning has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA (84375462) and a LOA from Beckett Authentication (AA13234) for Robinson’s signature. Also included is the aforementioned envelope that measures approximately 3 ½ x 6 ½ inches and was addressed to “Calvin Young 6059 Lawndale Street Philadelphia 11, Penn.” The envelope has been torn at the top. There is also a black and white 3 ½ x 5 ½-inch photo postcard of Robinson in his home Dodgers’ uniform leaning on a bat that has a facsimile “Sincerely Yours Jackie Robinson”.
