Presented here is an 8 x 11-inch program from the 1963 NFL World Championship game between the New York Giants and Chicago Bears. The game was played at Wrigley Field in Chicago on December 29th, 1963. The game was noted for the temperature that dropped well below 10 degrees. The New York Giants were one of the best teams in football during the early 1960s, appearing in three straight NFL Championship games after acquiring legendary quarterback Yelberton Abraham “Y.A.” Tittle from the San Francisco 49ers. Tittle put forward one of the best offensive seasons in history in 1963, throwing for an NFL record 36 touchdown passes, a number that would not be broken until Dan Marino surpassed Tittle in the 1980s. The Chicago Bears brought to the game one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses that picked off 36 passes allowing just 10.3 points and 227 yards per game. The World Championship game saw the Giants commit 5 turnovers against the unrelenting Bears defense that stifled the Giants in temperatures that dipped below 10 degrees. The Bears would emerge victorious, besting the Giants 14-10. This presented program is from the 30th Anniversary of the First World Championship Game and features two footballs on the cover that are labeled “1933 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GAME” and “1963 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GAME” in white. The NFL logo shield and “NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ILLUSTRATED” appear running vertically down the left pink side of the program. “30th Anniversary First World Championship Game Chicago Bears Vs New York Giants at Wrigley Field December 17th, 1933” in white appears on the top left corner of the program. “1963 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CHICAGO BEARS vs NEW YORK GIANTS” appears on the bottom right corner in black. The inside of the program features articles and photographs of the teams and in-depth analysis of the big game. The pages of the program are toned, and there are tears on the front bottom of the cover and early elements of cornering. A gorgeous relic from the pre-merger era, this program is a testament to the importance of the World Championship prior to the event becoming The Super Bowl.
