Offered is a 1988 Notre Dame National Champions plaque that once hung in the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame. The xx x xx-inch brown wood and gold metal plaque features a relief circular badge at the top center of the display depicting a football running back eluding a tackle at the center while one of his offensive lineman takes out an oncoming defensive player at the left. Below the badge is a gold metal plaque engraved with the legend "NOTRE DAME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1988". The badge and the plaque are mounted on a Navy blue felt background within a brown wood frame. The 1988 Fighting Irish football squad, coached by Holtz, ended the season with 12 wins and no losses, winning the national championship. The Fighting Irish won the title by defeating the previously unbeaten and No. 3 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, by a score of a 34–21. The 1988 squad, one of 11 national title squads for the Irish, is considered to be one of the best undefeated teams in the history of college football. The 1988 National Championship was the first for the Irish since 1977, and is currently the last national title the football program has collected. This item comes with a LOA from Lou Holtz, and 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this item will benefit the Holtz Charitable Foundation, Inc.
