The 18th President of The United States and famed Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant has signed this carte-de-visites (CDV) or visiting card. Grant was the Commanding General of the United States Army from March 9, 1864 until 1869, when the unassuming battlefield genius ascended to the highest office in the land. Grant led the Union army to several decisive victories in the Civil War, including the Overland Campaign and the pivotal Vicksburg Campaign. As President, Grant rebuilt the United States economy after the disastrous Johnson presidency and helped reunite the United States after the schism of the Civil War. Today, Grant's presidency is regarded by experts and pundits as one of the most successful of the 19th century.

Long before the era of modern photography, images of such admired figures were captured on items known as carte-de-visites or visiting cards. Grant's signature in black ink appears below his image. The visiting card comes encapsulated and authenticated by Beckett Grading Services (00011040998), who assessed the autograph as AUTHENTIC.
