Released in North America on June 23, 1991, the 2D side-scrolling platform game featured Sonic the Hedgehog and his quest to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik before he finds the Chaos Emeralds. The game was commercially successful, critically acclaimed, and praised for its visuals, audio, and gameplay. “Sonic the Hedgehog” was instrumental in establishing Sega as a player in the home console market and helped launch the “Console Wars” between Sega and the Super Nintendo. The game sold over 15 million copies and helped launch the “Sonic” franchise.
