Presented is the original 11” x 9” “Enlightened Tutor” oil painting by artist Dan Frazier. This painting appeared as the illustration for the card “Enlightened Tutor” in Magic: The Gathering’s ninth expansion, the 1996 release Mirage. Dan began his storied illustration career in 1990, most notably working with Wizards of the Coast on their trading card game Magic: The Gathering. He illustrated the five-card “Mox Cycle,” some of the most iconic and valuable cards ever printed. Wizards of the Coast originally commissioned this presented painting to be the Mox Diamond. However, plans for that card were scrapped. The art director loved the art, insisted on its inclusion in the Mirage set, and assigned it to the “Enlightened Tutor” card. Typical Magic: The Gathering illustrations are produced in 5”x 7” or 7” x 9”, making this one-of-a-kind oil painting truly unique, being on a full size 11” x 9” illustration board.
