Ralph Ellison spent the summer of 1945 writing the a novel while on sick leave from the Merchant marines; what he did not know at the time that he was penning the American literature classic, Invisible Man. The main thesis of the work addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans in the early 20th Century. Finally published in 1952, the Invisible Man won the 1953 National Book Award for Fiction. Offered is a rare 1st Edition of Invisible Man that was signed on the first interior page by the author, Ralph Ellison. Although personalized and inscribed, the inscription is jovial and Ellison added the date, May, 1952. This vintage Ralph Ellison signature comes with a LOA from JSA.
