The public clamored for the toys based on the hit science-fiction film, but Kenner, who held the toy licensing rights to the film, could not supply the demand in 1977, missing the crucial Christmas holiday. The toy company would ramp up production in 1978, producing 40 million action figures, vehicles, and toys from the movie and earning $100 million in revenue.
