Don Mattingly followed his breakout 1984 rookie season as First Baseman for the New York Yankees with MVP honors in 1985, establishing himself as a rising superstar who was to be feared at the plate, not just for his power but as a batter who could hit for average as well. He is also regarded as one the best defensive first baseman of his generation showing great versatility and impressive range on the field, Mattingly was awarded nine Gold Glove Awards during his impressive career. In 1997 the New York Yankees officially retired his number “23” and dedicated a plaque to Mattingly in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. The plaque calls Mattingly, “A humble man of grace and dignity, a captain who led by example, proud of the pinstripe tradition and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, a Yankee forever.” This Game Used Don Mattingly Left Handed NY Yankees Batting Helmet size 7 1/4 is signed on the front of the helmet in silver marker next to the NY Yankee logo. This helmet also features his number “23” on the brim and on the back. The helmet has a crack along the back and shows a good amount of wear. Item includes a COA from PSA/DNA (X90288) and a LOA from Glen Rosenbaum, former professional Major League Baseball player, coach and front office official for the Chicago White Sox certifying Mattingly’s helmet is from his personal collection.
