Along with his feats on the baseball diamond that earned him a place in both the Baseball Hall of Fame and the College Baseball Hall of Fame, in 2004 ESPN named Dave Winfield the third-best all-around athlete of all time in any sport. Winfield earned a full baseball scholarship to the University of Minnesota in 1969, where he starred in baseball and basketball for the Golden Gophers. Following college, Winfield was drafted by four professional teams in three different sports. The San Diego Padres selected him as a pitcher with the fourth overall pick in the MLB draft and both the Atlanta Hawks (NBA) and the Utah Stars (ABA) drafted him for basketball. Though he never played college football, the Minnesota Vikings selected Winfield in the 17th round of the NFL draft. In the Major Leagues, Winfield was a 12-time All-Star, World Series champion, 7-time Gold Glove Award winner, 6-time Silver Slugger Award winner, AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1990 and Roberto Clemente Award recipient.
This DW20 Adironack/Rawlings bat is from the 1994 label period. The bat is 35.75 inches and 32.9 ounces, consistent with manufacturer ordering records. According to the PSA/DNA authentication letter that accompanies the bat, it shows outstanding use and has been broken into two pieces and glued back together with a 1.25” piece missing from the break. Evidently, this bat experienced the power wielded by Winfield and has the scars to prove it.
