Samuel Clemens better known by his pen name Mark Twain is and American author and humorist. He is the author of such American classics, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Twain is a national treasure who was full of wit and he had an eye for the truth which can be found in his works. He was alive to witness America changing; history unfolded right before him as he was present to see the end of slavery, advancements in industrialization, and he saw the country turn into an international world power. As these changes were happening Twain had much to say about them and his point of view as an eyewitness to history are just as entertaining and thought provoking now as they were back then. This typed letter dated from 1906 reads, “I thank you very much for the compliment of your invitation, but I am obliged to decline it, as I have made all the engagements for this year that I can keep.” One can get a small sense of Twain’s sharp wit and humor, as he kindly passes on an invitation due to the rest of his year already being filled up with prior engagements, and as one can see, this letter was signed early in the year in April. Twain signed this letter using his birth name Samuel Clemens in black ink. Item comes encapsulated by PSA/DNA 83779375.
