An incredible on-site broadside poster from John Glenn’s homecoming visit on March 3, 1962 to New Concord, Ohio, the town in which he grew up; to celebrate his historic Friendship 7 mission becoming the first American to orbit the earth in space on February 20, 1962. The patriotic red, white & blue 18 X 24 poster printed on light cardboard pictures Glenn and honors fellow Mercury Seven astronauts and program members by name, Alan Shepard Jr., Virgil Grissom, Deke Slayton, Scott Carpenter, Walter Schirra and Gordon Cooper. These seven elite U.S. military test pilots were selected by NASA to operate the experimental Mercury spacecraft and become America’s first astronauts. Born in Cambridge, Ohio, Glenn grew up in New Concord where he went to high school and attended Muskingum College. Glenn who was just honored with his fellow astronauts two days earlier with a huge ticker tape parade held in New York City was certainly no less honored by the outpouring of love and admiration extended by the 50,000 people who flocked to his hometown of 2,500 to honor him. This is as fine and as historic poster as one might ever find from the earliest era of America’s space program.
