A perfect game ... 27 consecutive Cubs wore out the carpet between the batter's box and the dugout; not one of them got on base by any means. It was late in the season – September 9, 1965 – and Sandy Koufax got the nod (as he regularly did) to vanquish the adversary. And that he did, emphatically. One of the game's patrons kept his ticket stub for posterity, and that captivating souvenir is offered here. The stub’s clean obverse guaranteed general admission to Dodger Stadium’s Top Deck, and afforded parking privileges in any “Blue” lot. On the back, the attendee recorded the day’s event in blue ballpoint, “Dodgers won / Sandy Cofax [sic] pitched a perfect game 1-0 against Cubs.” Koufax, by the way, fanned fourteen batters, and the Dodgers sorely needed the victory in the hotly contested '65 National League home-stretch. Not everyone was so excited about the day, however. The Cubs of 1965 were mired in the second division, and they could certainly have used even a bit of encouragement. Their hurler in that tilt was Bob Hendley, who provided his employer with a one-hitter through 8 innings. Ruefully, on that particular Sunday evening, his solid effort simply amounted to another Cubs loss.
