It’s a well-known story that Walt Disney’s first character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, was essentially stolen from him by Universal Studios. Walt created Mickey Mouse to serve as a replacement character in 1928 and his impact was immediate. Mickey appeared in films and comic strips, and was merchandised extensively in comic books, wrist watches, alarm clocks, and numerous other products, including this First Edition Mickey Mouse Waddle Book, published in 1934.
On the copyright page of this particular book is a page that reads “My Book”, inscribed with the name Margot Williamson. On the page previous is the inscription, in pencil, reading “To Margot With Best Wishes Walt Disney”. Of great significance here is that Walt Disney was known to have used 2 different signatures throughout his life. He used a cursive style signature when signing checks and legal documents. However, the signature illustrated here is a rare “Block Style” signature from the 1930’s, during Walt’s early years at the Hyperion Studio. Even more significant is having a Disney signature of this style in a 1st Edition Mickey Mouse book, a truly unique marriage of 2 Disney rarities in one collectible item. Item shows significant wear, with cracked and broken binding , however that does not detract from the appeal of the item and the quality of the signature. Authenticated and graded by PSA/DNA Mint 9.
