Harry Houdini gained fame as an escape artist in the early 1900’s, but it was many years earlier that he had begun his career as an aspiring magician. In 1893, Harry and his brother Theo performed as the Houdini Brothers at the Chicago World’s Fair. It is this performance that informs the significance of this signed photograph. This glossy black & white 7" x 8" profile photo of legendary magician and escape artist Harry Houdini, is signed in black fountain pen and inscribed , “To Mae Tiner, Best wishes and regards, Houdini, Oct 25—1919”. An additional inscription below the signature reads “’and—so this is the Houdini who struggled so hard in Chicago’ Yes, he started—and starred there. HH.” This is a rare reference to Houdini’s early, formative years as a magician, and a direct reference to his appearance in Chicago as part of the ‘Brothers Houdini’. Photograph is framed & matted to 13X16 size, with the photo showing some minor creasing and edge tears. Item comes with LOA from PSA/DNA, and a signature grade of MINT 9.
