Rare Partly Printed Bank Check endorsed “Lyndon B. Johnson” in black felt tip and “Mary Rather, Trustee / Book Account” in blue ink, on verso of $17 check payable to him, signed “George R. Sanders, Jr.,” noted in type “(For ‘The Vantage Point’).” Portland, Oregon, November 8, 1971. Bank stampings dated February 1972 touch signatures, in LBJ’s on the “h” and connectors to previous and next letters in Johnson. The clarity and contrast of Johnson’s dark black signature is unaffected.
Mary Rather was Lyndon B. Johnson’s first private secretary. She went to work for him in 1934 when he was secretary to Texas Congressman Richard M. Kleberg in Washington, D.C., and continued working for him through his years in the House, Senate, White House, and retirement at the LBJ Ranch.
In September 2010, a 1967 check signed by Lyndon B. Johnson, with a 1971 check signed by Lady Bird Johnson, sold for $20,546.40 at RR Auctions. American Book Prices Current has no record of the sale of another check signed by Lyndon B. Johnson.
