Dramatic black and white photograph of the fight between Giants pitcher
Juan Marichal and Dodgers catcher John Roseboro. Giants-Dodgers games
were always heated affairs as far back as the 1930’s but on August 22,
1965 that rivalry erupted into horrific violence when Juan Marichal
responded to a too-close-for-comfort throw by catcher Roseboro by
clubbing the catcher in the head with his bat. Pitcher Sandy Koufax
ran to Roseboro’s defense and prevented Marichal from killing his
stricken catcher. A 14 minute bench-clearing fight ensued, all
televised. Marichal was given a $1,750 fine and 8 day suspension. It
took 14 stitches to sew Roseboro’s head back together and many blame
this horrifying incident for the long delay in voting Marichal to the
Hall of Fame. Signed in blue marker by Juan Marichal, John Roseboro and
Sandy Koufax. COA from PSA/DNA.
