Of all the sluggers on the mid-to-late 1970’s New York Yankees’ teams, no other player’s bats are as sought after as those wielded by The Captain, Thurman Munson. For a decade Munson was the on-field commander of the Bronx Bombers, the pillar around which a pennant-winning dynasty was built. Munson used this bat during the years following his MVP season and up until his tragic death in 1979. No other game used bats from this era are as sought after as a Munson, and this is a standout example.
The Captain’s Hillerich & Bradsby S44 model bat shows light use and is un-cracked. The barrel shows several ball marks with stitch impressions. There are green bat rack paint streaks on its barrel and some checking from repeated ball contact is present. The stamping pops right off the golden flame-treated wood – the only thing that could be called a flaw on this bat is that the left side of the barrel stamping is a little lighted than the rest of the stamping – and that’s nit-picking. A beautiful bat from the era when the Yankees ruled the baseball world and Munson was King of the Catchers. This bat comes with a Letter of Authenticity from MEARS (305222).
