After falling to the Cincinnati Reds in the 1970 National League Championship Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates rebounded in the 1971 season to win the World Series Championship by defeating the reigning World Series Champion Baltimore Orioles in a classic seven-game series. 20 members of that championship team have signed this Wilson “PITTSBURGH PIRATES” baseball. The team has signed their respective names in both blue and black ink with manager Danny Murtaugh signing his name in blue on the sweet spot. Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, who would tragically die in a plane crash two years later, signed his name in blue pen on the “OFFICIAL LEAGUE CORK AND RUBBER CENTER” stamped side panel with Manny Sanguillen (black), Don Osborn (black) and one other. The “Wilson HORSEHIDE COVER” stamp panel features the signatures of Bob Veale (black), Gene Clines (black), Jose Pagan (blue) and Milt May (blue). The side panel to the right of the “PITTSBURGH PIRATES” stamp has the signatures of Bill Virdon (black), Frank Oceak (black), Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski (black), Nelson Briles (black – signed Nellie Briles) and Dave Cash (blue). The side panel to the left of the “PITTSBURGH PIRATES” stamp has Dock Ellis (blue), Jackie Hernandez (blue), Dave Giusti (black), Bob Robertson (black), Willie Stargell (blue) deemed clubhouse version and Steve Blass (blue). This Pirates team-signed baseball comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (Q07483).
