Eddie Gottlieb, best known as “Mr. Basketball” and “The Mogul” bought the Philadelphia Warriors in 1951. After serving as coach and general manager under former owner Peter Tyrrell, whose team was a charter member of the Basketball Association of America in 1946, Gottlieb would run the team until he sold his shares and the team moved to San Francisco in 1962. Offered are a series of documents relating to the sale of the Philadelphia Warriors when Gottlieb purchased the club from Tyrell in 1952 and when he sold it in 1962.
There are several multi-page documents covering the Stock Purchase Agreement, the contract signed by both Tyrell and Gottlieb transferring ownership and many others. There are 17 separate letters and contracts offered in this lot. The documents cover several years and offer a great insight to the business dealings involved with a major purchase and sale of franchise and derive from the Eddie Gottlieb Estate.
