     Presented here is an encapsulated signed check by Joseph Pulitzer. Joseph Pulitzer was newspaper publisher of the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the New York World. Pulitzer along with William Randolph Hearst are credited with the beginnings of yellow journalism, using attention grabbing headlines, or exaggerated news in order to capture national attention. Randolph was elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat, however continued his career in journalism. His newspaper the New York World exposed the U.S’s illegal $40 million payment to the French Panama Canal Company.

     After Pulitzer’s death, his will had granted $2million dollars to Columbia University in order to start a school of journalism. Following this, the University of Columbia began the now famous Pulitzer Prize recognizing achievements in literature, journalism, and art. To this day, the Graduate school of Journalism at Columbia University is among one of the most prestigious journalism schools in the world.

     This check is signed, dated, and inscribed by Joseph Pulitzer. The title of the check reads : Office of The Post Dispatch. It was paid to the order of “State Savings Association”, for “Ninehundred Seventysix Dollars”, dated “February 21, 1882”. It is signed in bold black ink on the bottom right. This signed check has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA (8338962) and has been graded a MINT 9.
